Thriller Jacket
This is cool. You’re not going to wear it every day, but when you bring it out, put on Michael Jackson’s famous Thriller video, maybe do some moves, expect the oohs and aaah:

Here is a screen shot of Michael wearing the jacket in the video (not the best picture, but it will do):
What you want is a jacket that replicates the authentic Thriller jacket as close as possible.
There are some great leather jackets available.
There are also some ‘red’ leather jackets that, while nice, are being advertised as Michael Jackson Thriller Replica Jackets.
Beware.
Note the black diagonals in Michael Jackson’s original jacket. A purely red jacket is not your best replica.

But be on the lookout out for ‘new’ Thriller Jackets that are simply red leather jackets. Keep in mind whenever you are reading this, have manufacturers had time since Michael’s death to produce and ship-out authentic looking jackets? If not, look for the vintage or 1984 release jackets.

Sorry Chloe and everyone else on here. The Thriller jacket was designed by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, the wife of John Landis (who directed Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”). She designed the jacket from top to bottom and only TWO were ever made. The clean, fresh, new jacket, and the rotten, torn zombie version. Both which were seen only in the video. Deborah has never named Marc Laurent as the tailor who actually sewed the jacket. Marc Laurent is listed randomly on an over seas news paper article about a man who had the jacket replicated. However the photo of the jacket that was made by Marc Laurent is not correctly sewn. The black strap and buckle around each sleeve is not a solid black as Michaels was in the Thriller video. Until Deborah confirms Marc tailored the jacket for her, I do not take the word of some random person.
The mass produced jackets in the 80’s were by J. Park and were not completely accurate either. The front snap/flap’s on some of them folded/snapped on the wrong side and the shoulders were never identical to the way Deborah designed them.

October 28, 2009, New York, NY: “This Is the real thing”, said Los Angeles’ Rafael Wizman, the Master Tailor for Marc Laurent of Paris, who with Costume Designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis took the now world famous Thriller Jacket from the design and cutting table to the back of Michael Jackson during the filming of the Thriller Video. The Marc Laurent Company announced yesterday that they will produce 5,000 Thriller Jackets exactly like the ones sewed for Landis and make them available to the public as authenticated and certified King of Pop collectibles.
Wizman is the tailor Landis referred to but did not name in an interview she gave the Wall Street Journal.
The famous red leather jacket, which Laurent tailored for Director John Landis’ Thriller Video will go into production soon and only be available for purchase by appointment. Each Thriller Jacket will be sewn by Laurent exactly as he did for the original two Jackets used in the Thriller Video and will be numbered, autographed by Laurent and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Each jacket will also be customized to the actual size of the collector who is purchasing the jacket.
“This will not be a jacket you can buy at a costume shop or in a chain store operation; this will be the real thing. The Marc Laurent Company is going to make this the same labor of love they did when they first took on the project,” said Raul Vicente, Jr., a New York based Free Lance Publicist. Marc Laurent also tailored the Beat It Jacket designed for the Beat It Music Video, added Vicente.
In the wake of the King of Pops’ sudden and tragic death many manufacturers are trying to license and sell facsimiles of both jackets, but according to Laurent, if you want to own a Thriller Jacket that was actually made by the person who tailored the original you will have to come to him. “I’m doing this because I am tired seeing so many badly done copies of this wonderful garment,” said Laurent, who added that this will probably be the only time he does this. “I’m going to make these and then there will be no more originals” said the master tailor. Laurent said he is going to offer the Patterns and any sketches he has to the Hard Rock Café where his original Beat It Jacket is on display and if they don’t want to buy them then he will put them up for auction to the highest bidder.
Laurent also intends to donate some of the jackets to be auction off by several well known charities which he will name once the jackets are in production.
“These garments and the tools used to make them are now a part of history”, said Laurent, who added that he did not want to see them end up in a trash can or some other unlikely place after he moves on to the hereafter. Laurent said the jackets and the tools are his contribution to the entertainment industry and they are his legacy.
